How to type Hebrew
You do not need a Hebrew keyboard to use the calculator. Here are three ways to enter Hebrew, from easiest to most permanent.
1. Use the on-screen keyboard
On the calculator, press Hebrew keyboard. Every key shows its letter and its value. Choose Alphabetical if you are learning the letters, or Israeli layout if you know the standard keyboard. Final letters (ך ם ן ף ץ) have their own keys. It works the same on phones.
2. Type with your own keyboard
Tick Type Hebrew with my own keyboard under the text box. Your ordinary keys then produce the Hebrew letter printed in the same place on an Israeli keyboard (standard SI-1452):
| Key | Letter | Key | Letter | Key | Letter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| E | ק | S | ד | Z | ז |
| R | ר | D | ג | X | ס |
| T | א | F | כ | C | ב |
| Y | ט | G | ע | V | ה |
| U | ו | H | י | B | נ |
| I | ן | J | ח | N | מ |
| O | ם | K | ל | M | צ |
| P | פ | L | ך | , | ת |
| A | ש | ; | ף | . | ץ |
3. Add Hebrew to your device
- Windows 10 and 11: Settings → Time & language → Language & region → Add a language → Hebrew. Switch keyboards with Windows key + Space.
- macOS: System Settings → Keyboard → Text Input → Edit → + → Hebrew. Switch with Control + Space or the Globe key.
- iPhone and iPad: Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard → Hebrew. Switch with the globe key.
- Android (Gboard): Gboard settings → Languages → Add keyboard → Hebrew. Switch with the globe key or by holding the space bar.
Menu names change between versions, so if a step looks different, search your device’s settings for “keyboard” or “input source”.
Copying text with vowels
Text copied from a Bible or prayer-book site often has vowel points (niqqud) and cantillation marks. The calculator removes them, and ignores punctuation such as the maqaf (־) and sof pasuq (׃), so you can paste verses directly.
Don’t know the spelling?
Type the word in English letters (for example shalom or chesed) and the calculator suggests Hebrew spellings. They are approximate: English letters do not show which Hebrew letter is meant, so check the suggestion against a dictionary.
