The four ciphers
- English Ordinal (Simple English). A = 1, B = 2 … Z = 26. “gematria” = 74.
- Reverse Ordinal. Z = 1 … A = 26. For any word, ordinal + reverse = 27 × the number of letters.
- Full Reduction. Each letter’s ordinal is reduced to one digit: A–I = 1–9, J–R = 1–9, S–Z = 1–8.
- “English Gematria”. A = 6, B = 12 … Z = 156, which is simply the ordinal value times six. Some sites call the same cipher “Sumerian”.
These are modern inventions
Hebrew, Greek and Arabic all used their letters as numerals, so gematria in those languages starts from the ordinary way people wrote numbers. The Latin alphabet was never used that way (Roman numerals use only a handful of letters), so any English cipher has to be invented. The ones above have no ancient or religious source. Several of their names, including “English Gematria” for the A = 6 cipher, come from websites that popularised them.
Treat English cipher matches as word play. They do not carry the textual tradition of Hebrew gematria, and with only four or five hundred possible totals for everyday words, coincidences are guaranteed. Our disclaimer explains why this site does not decode names or news.
Same-value words
The word list under each result comes from the public-domain 12dicts 2of12 list of 39,523 common English words. Because “English Gematria” is the ordinal times six, it produces exactly the same list.
Hebrew for an English word
To find the Hebrew gematria of an English word you need the Hebrew word, not the English letters. Type the English on the main calculator and it suggests Hebrew spellings to choose from.
