Im HaKolel
Im ha-kolel means “with the whole”. The idea is that a word counts as a unit in addition to its letters, so one is added to the standard total. It is used to relate two numbers that differ by one.
How the calculator counts it
The calculator adds one per word: a single word gets +1, and a three-word phrase gets +3. Another variant adds the number of letters instead of the number of words. The calculator does not show that variant, but you can work it out from the letter count in the breakdown.
Worked examples
אחד (echad)
13 + 1 = 14
שמע ישראל (two words)
951 + 2 = 953
Because the kolel makes near-misses into matches, treat it with extra care: with it, any two totals that differ by one can be called equal.
