The number 13 in gematria
13י״גwritten in Hebrew letters
Significance in the sources
אחד (echad, “one”) and אהבה (ahavah, “love”) both total 13: א 1 + ח 8 + ד 4, and א 1 + ה 5 + ב 2 + ה 5. The equality is often quoted. It is arithmetic, and we know of no classical source for it that we could verify.
- The age of the commandments. “At thirteen, for the commandments” (Pirkei Avot 5:21). This is the source usually given for the age of Bar Mitzvah; see our Bar Mitzvah calculator.
- The thirteen attributes of mercy. The Talmud describes God teaching Moses to recite “the thirteen attributes of mercy”, the list in Exodus 34:6–7, when the people seek forgiveness (Rosh Hashanah 17b).
