The number 30 in gematria

30ל׳written in Hebrew letters

Significance in the sources

A nazirite vow with no stated length lasts thirty days. The Talmud derives this from Numbers 6:5, “he shall be (יהיה, yihyeh) holy”, because yihyeh is י 10 + ה 5 + י 10 + ה 5 = 30 (Nazir 5a). It is one of the clearest legal uses of gematria in the Talmud.

ל (lamed), the tallest letter, is 30.
