How the calculator works
Each Hebrew letter stands for a number: א is 1, י is 10, ק is 100, up to ת at 400. Gematria adds them up. The standard method (Mispar Hechrachi) is the one used in the Talmud’s examples. The others change a letter’s value (Gadol, Katan, Siduri) or swap letters before counting (Atbash, Albam).
For example, שלום (shalom) is ש 300 + ל 30 + ו 6 + ם 40 = 376. In Mispar Gadol the final mem ם counts as 600, so the same word is 936.

A note on meaning
A gematria value is arithmetic, and many unrelated words share each value: Strong’s dictionary alone has 16 entries worth 376. When classical Jewish texts use gematria, they attach it to a particular verse to illustrate a teaching, and our introduction quotes those passages with references. This site does not use numbers to predict events, read the news or say what a name means for a person’s life.
